Launch of Prepared

A project aimed to Prepare

The large collaborative project PREPARED: Enabling Change, was accepted for funding by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme on the 29th of May 2009.

vision

The PREPARED project originates from the WssTP Thematical Working Group (TWG) on Sustainable Water Management in Urban Areas. Many of the project partners in PREPARED worked as experts in this TWG.

The project is built around a large number of city utilities and the  challenges they face as a result of  climate change. The selection of the cities involved in PREPARED was done on the basis of three criteria: the geographic representativeness, the added value of the cities to the matrix of challenges and the ability  of the cities to invest a considerable amount of effort (money and staff) in adaptation measures. This “Research and demonstration project on adaptation of water supply and sanitation systems to climate change” plans to work towards just such an adaptation.

Faced with the rise of annual average temperatures, rainfall changes and as a consequence the rising risk of floods and droughts, PREPARED plans to research and exploit opportunities for innovative adaptation technologies and solutions while also supporting climate-proof EU policies and Directives.

PREPARED has a three-fold management team alongside the project coordinator, Adriana  Hulsmann of KWR Watercycle Research Institute, consists of Anders Lynggaard-Jensen of DHI and Yann Moreau-Le Golvan of the KompetenzZentrum Wasser Berlin. The project aims to link comprehensive research with development programmes in participating urban utilities that are working on an advanced strategy in meeting the upcoming challenges for water supply and sanitation. The project which is built around twelve European and two non-European city utilities, their research partners and technology suppliers (mostly SMEs) aims to develop new designs, tools and systems in order to approach adaptation and therefore enable change.
