World Economic Forum: Water Supply Crises one of the Top Global Risks
Nicole Zantkuijl, WssTP
The World Economic Forum just launched its Global Risks 2013( eight edition) .Water supply crisis has been identified as one of the top five global risks for both the impact and likelihood.
Water Supply Crises one of the five centred of gravity for global risks
The report is developed from an annual survey of more than 1,000 experts from industry, government, academia and civil society worldwide who were asked to review a landscape of 50 global risks. The average score of the experts for the likelyhood of Water Supply Crisis is 3.85 and 3.98 for the impact. These scores identify Water Supply Crisis as one of the five centres of gravity for global risks. Water supply crisis is defined as a decline in the quality and quantity of fresh water combine with increased competition among resource-intensive systems, such as food and energy production. Respondents expect this global risk to be one of the most likely to manifest itself over the next 10 years and that it would have one of highest impact on society.
Resilience to the perfect global storm
Relevant to the solutions for the water supply crisis is that ‘failure to adapt to climate change' and ‘major systemic financial failure' are as well identified as one of the five centres for global risk. The report introduces "testing economic and environmental resilience" as one of the three key risk cases to assess at the global and national levels. Continued stress on the global economic system is positioned to absorb the attention of leaders for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, the Earth's environmental system is simultaneously coming under increasing stress. Future simultaneous shocks to both systems could trigger the "perfect global storm": On the economic front, global resilience is being tested by bold monetary and austere fiscal policies. On the environmental front, the Earth's resilience is being tested by rising global temperatures and extreme weather events that are likely to become more frequent and severe. A sudden and massive collapse on one front is certain to doom the other's chance of developing an effective, long-term solution. Given the likelihood of future financial crises and natural catastrophes, are there ways to build resilience in our economic and environmental systems at the same time?
A perfect call for Europe to WssTPs view to excel in innovation in water technology and resource efficiency.

WssTP Input - EU Adaptation Strategy
The European Commission is now preparing the EU Adaptation Strategy, as a follow up of the White Paper on adaptation to climate change entitled "Adapting to climate change: Towards a European framework for action" (adopted April 2009).
The EU Adaptation Strategy is expected to aim to enhance the preparedness and capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change in the EU, its Member States and regions, down to the local level.
This includes, preparing for and responding to rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, sea level rise and extreme weather events. Action in the water cycle is key in that.
